Sony Ericsson shipments gather momentum during 2Q05

Swedish/Japanese joint venture Sony Ericsson today reported that net income for the quarter to end-June decreased Eur14 million (US$17 million) year on year, from Eur89 million in 2Q04 to Eur75 million in 2Q05. The vendor said the decrease was due to continued investment in R&D, but that sales increased 7% year on year from Eur1.5 billion in 2Q04 to Eur1.61 billion in 2Q05 as the company gained momentum with a new portfolio of products beginning to ship.
Indeed, the vendor claims that the broadening of its product portfolio to appeal to a wider range of price segments is key to an increase in unit shipments, which grew 14% year on year from 10.4 million in 2Q04, to 11.88 million in the three months to end-June.
Miles Flint, president of Sony Ericsson said that the company gained momentum "as new products began to ship, and the increased investment in product portfolio expansion over the past year started to bear fruit." New phones such as the 2 megapixel K750 camera phone, the K600 mid-tier UMTS phone, and the K300 affordable camera phone, were well received by consumers and started to make a good contribution during the quarter, Flint said.
